The Rumba was brought to the United States in the 1930s in which people danced in small steps within a small area. By the 1940s, this dance was known as a popular ballroom dance with passionate appeal. In beginning of the 1940s the Jitterbug was introduced. It was the first dance in 2 centuries that allowed people to individually express themselves. The GIs carried on this dance overseas and danced it with barmaids, local girl, and even each other. Swing was the white middle class version of the Jitterbug. People in big bands such as Glen Miller and Benny Goodman helped spread the news of this new dance. The "Big Band Era" was soon known as the Swing Era.

Before 1941 when two-platoon baseball was allowed, all eleven players on the team played the entire game with substitutions used only for injuries. Since wood was in short supply due to the war, there were few baseball bats and bowling pins. Rubber also went towards the war effort so many balls were soggy and unresponsive. Basketball became the least affected sport due to the war because the players were too tall and thus ineligible for service in the military. The Basketball Association of America, created in 1946, joined with the National Basketball League in 1949 to form the NBA. In 1948, the penalty flag became official and was first used in 1941.
Before the war, many women owned dresses and skirts for the morning, afternoon, and the evening. During wartime, it was acceptable when women woke slacks and due to the shortage of fabric clothing had to be simpler and more tailored. Men wore suits at all times and never wore plaid shirts outside of a golf game. Teenage girls wore poodle skirts starting in the late 1940s. After the war women began wore pants outside of the house, less restricting clothes. and sholder pads became less popular.
